Huge thanks to Kael for being willing to rant with me on a subject I love to rant about. ;> I don't know why anyone would want to, but please do not steal any of the words on this page; instead, link yourself to M . I . S . T. - - This is a short page which consists of excerpts from e-mails between Kael and Ganymede about Mitsuru and Shinobu's relationship. Obviously, Mitsuru and Shinobu are not OFFICIALLY a couple (even if Nasu Yukie had them kissing in the manga :P), but we like to think so, and we were talking about their relationship. But anyway: Kael writes: [In the fourth episode] there's a part where it's like Shinobu gives permission for the ghost to haunt Mitsuru, which makes it seem sort of like Mitsuru is his property. Actually, the casual way that Shinobu seems to override Mitsuru's busy schedule in the Devilwood episode when he tells him what role he'll be playing without any prior discussion could be seen as a similar presumption of property. Ganymede replies: This is one of the many subtle or perhaps not-so-subtle things I love about their relationship. Mitsuru comes off as being very fierce, independent, bossy, the type who doesn't let anyone push him around. Yet Shinobu has him wrapped around his little finger, so to speak; he's the only one who can tease Mitsuru consistently and order him about, and I think it's significant that Mitsuru takes it without much complaint. In the same vein, Shinobu seems very closed off, cool, and distantly elegant, even when he has that cute smile on his face where his eyes are squinched shut. ^^ The only person who makes him show true emotion is Mitsuru, like in that scene where Cool Mint talks to Lemon Herb and in the scene where Shinobu is in bed talking about Mitsuru's childhood. I know I'm reading too much into things, but I can't help that, that's what being a fan is about. ^^ Kael: [Regarding the scene where Misako wants to possess someone in order to kiss Mitsuru,] Misako mentions that she can possess someone of strong psychic potential; *immediately*, everyone looks at Shinobu (I love that). Ganymede: Yes! ...And for a moment, Shinobu actually looks surprised for once. The only other time I remember him looking even slightly surprised or at a loss or whatever is in the same episode, when Shun asks him how he knows so much about girls' school uniforms. Kael: [Regarding the scene where Misako wants to possess Shinobu in order to kiss Mitsuru,] Shinobu looks at Mitsuru to see what Mitsuru wants him to do. Mitsuru gives him a "you better not" or "don't you dare" look, and, after maintaining eye contact to convey his understanding, Shinobu turns back with his refusal. Ganymede: That's EXACTLY how I saw it. Shinobu seemed quite prepared to do it, but for once, he actually wanted/needed Mitsuru's approval.
